Ribeirão do Meio
🌊 River 📍 Lençóis (Chapada Diamantina, Bahia) Free entryA natural stone slide worn smooth over centuries that sends you straight into a clear, cool natural pool. Free, with a short, simple walk from town: no guide, no ticket. Most fun in the afternoon when the sun has warmed the rock, and remember the slide is slippery, so go down lying on your back.
-
Poço do Diabo (Rio Mucugezinho)
💧 Waterfall 📍 Lençóis (Chapada Diamantina, Bahia) Free entryA waterfall of about 20 metres with a deep, dark pool reckoned to be one of the coldest in the Chapada, and one of the most accessible free swimming spots in the area. Free, a short trail, no guide needed. The brave jump from the rocks into the reddish water; everyone else just dips and floats.
-
Morro do Pai Inácio
⛰️ Viewpoint 📍 Palmeiras (Chapada Diamantina, Bahia)The iconic viewpoint of the Chapada Diamantina, with a 360-degree panorama over the surrounding mountains and the finest sunset in the region. The climb is short and easy, and you can drive there yourself without a guide. Entry is almost free (only about R$12), and the perfect time is close to sunset; just remember that entry closes at 17:00.
-
Mirante e Cachoeirão do Vale do Pati
⛰️ Viewpoint 📍 Vale do Pati (Chapada Diamantina, Bahia) Free entryConsidered the most beautiful trek in Brazil: huge canyons, hidden waterfalls and the Cachoeirão viewpoint, which looks over dozens of falls dropping about 300 metres into the canyon. The view itself is free; you pay only for meals and a bed with the families who live in the valley, which makes this a true backpacker route. Most impressive in the rainy season (November–April), when the falls are at their peak.
-
Cataratas dos Couros (Águas do Paraíso)
💧 Waterfall 📍 São Jorge / Alto Paraíso de Goiás (Chapada dos Veadeiros) Free entryOne of the finest waterfall complexes in the Chapada dos Veadeiros, with plenty of swimming spots along the way and the great São Vicente fall dropping about 100 metres. Free (open 8:00–17:00), which is rare in a region where most waterfalls sit on private land and charge. The trail is rocky and demanding, so wear good shoes and carry lots of water, and reward yourself with a dip at every stop.
-
Cachoeira do Tobogã (da Penha)
🌊 River 📍 Paraty (Rio de Janeiro) Free entryA huge, smooth rock with water running over it, turning it into a fast, fun natural slide, one of the free experiences backpackers love around Paraty. No ticket, and a cheap local bus gets you there. You can slide, dip in the pools and jump from the rocks; a little upstream is the 'Poço do Tarzan', with another pool and a rope bridge.
-
Lagoa do Paraíso
🏞️ Lagoon 📍 Jijoca de Jericoacoara (Ceará) Free entryA freshwater lagoon in dreamy shades of blue, ringed by dunes, famous for the hammocks hung right over its shallow, warm water. The lagoon itself is free; you pay only if you want a hammock or a chair at one of the beach houses (or choose a free-entry spot such as Nova Esperança). Reached by 4x4 from Jeri; perfect for a lazy afternoon after the dunes.
-
Pedra Furada
🏖️ Beach 📍 Jericoacoara (Ceará) Free entryA natural rock arch on the shoreline that has become the symbol of Jericoacoara. You can walk there for free along the beach or over the Serrote hill: no fee, no buggy or tour needed. The magic moment is between mid-June and late July, when the sun sets right 'inside' the hole in the rock; go before sunset to get a spot.
-
Cachoeiras do Parque Nacional da Serra do Cipó
💧 Waterfall 📍 Santana do Riacho (Minas Gerais) Free entrySerra do Cipó National Park is full of waterfalls and clear natural pools, and many of them, the ones inside the park, are free to enter. Cachoeira Grande itself is on private land and charges, but the park has dozens of free waterfalls on easy trails. A perfect area for swimming and picnics, a short drive from Belo Horizonte.
-
Poço Azul
🕳️ Cenote 📍 Nova Redenção (Chapada Diamantina, Bahia)A cave whose water is so clear that the people in it seem to float in mid-air. Between February and October, at certain hours, a shaft of sunlight enters and turns the water a glowing blue; June and July are the best months. Entry is not free but is fairly cheap, and snorkelling in that blue water is a magical experience not to miss.
-
Nascente Azul
🌊 River 📍 Bonito (Mato Grosso do Sul)A cheaper alternative to Bonito's expensive attractions: a spring with clear blue water, rock formations and a natural trail garden, where at least part of the access is free. The Bonito area is generally expensive, so these balneários and springs are the backpacker's way to experience its famous clear water without paying a fortune. Best in the dry season, when visibility in the water peaks.
-
Rio Serrano / Poços do Serrano
🌊 River 📍 Lençóis (Chapada Diamantina, Bahia)A series of natural pools and rock slides carved into red sandstone, with amber-coloured water from the tannins in the vegetation, all a short walk from the centre of Lençóis. The entry fee is a token (about R$20, valid for three days), and it is perfect for half a day of dipping, sliding and doing nothing. Nearby are the coloured-sand caves and the Primavera waterfall.
-
Cachoeira de Iracema
💧 Waterfall 📍 Presidente Figueiredo (Amazonas)A wide, gentle waterfall in the heart of the Amazon forest, one of the hundreds of falls of Presidente Figueiredo, the region's 'waterfall capital'. Entry is cheap (about R$10–20) and it is open daily 8:00–17:00, perfect for cooling off on hot, humid days. You can combine it with the nearby Araras fall; it is an easy drive of about an hour and a half from Manaus.
